Australian Vacation - Day 2
Adelaide - Kangaroo Island
Woke up before the crack of dawn (3:30am) in the quiet downtown of Sydney. Stepped into some guy’s cab who was obviously having difficulties keeping his car running but made it to the airport no worse for wear. Good old Mickey Ds is one of the few places that’s actually cheap here, so we had a delicious breakfast there. Got back on a plane less than 24 hours after the last one and headed for Adelaide.
Adelaide is a nice small city but I wouldn’t call it compact. It’s just off the coast of South Central Australia. We walked around for a bit then hopped on a modern tram for the suburb of Glenelg which is on the coast. Andrea was a bit disappointed because the last time she was here, the tram was still a historical one but I guess they decided to replace them all with something more efficient. The tram is actually free through the most touristy parts of the city which is a nice touch but we did have to pay to get to Glenelg.
Once there we walked down the pier, took some pics and visited a small museum they had set up. Basically told the history of that whole region of Australia. Had lunch at this amazing noodle place then headed back to the city. Did a bit of shopping, there isn’t a whole lot to see in Adelaide city centre to be honest, but we knew that going in. By 3pm, we’d had our fill of the place, and got on our coach to the port town of Cape Jervis which is the gateway to Kangaroo Island.
I wish I could say that the drive over was beautiful because the glimpses I got of it were but honestly, within 5 mins of our departure I was fast asleep. Andrea surprisingly lasted longer than I did, but soon followed suit. By the time we got to the port, it was pouring rain, super windy and cold. We ran to the ferry but for some reason, despite it only being 10 degrees outside, they decided it was a good time to blast the air conditioner. I guess they were looking to give us the full penguin experience.
Arrived at the port town of Penneshaw and towed our luggage up to the YHA hostel just up the road. Dropped our bags off and went to the nearby pub, right on the water for some delicious dinner. Up next was the penguin tour, which started just after dusk; the penguins only come ashore at night in an attempt to avoid predatory bird strikes. Unfortunately, it wasn’t as good as Andrea had experienced 5 years ago, but it was still pretty sweet. We saw plenty of little penguins but it was almost pitch black so I doubt many of my pics turned out. They tend to waddle up the rocks on the beach, play fight each other and then get it on loudly in the bushes. I got some good audio clips that would put most porn stars to shame.
That was it for day 2, full day of touring on day 3.
